Agar is the basis of the ever popular, ever reliable science experiment - comparing the growth behaviour of different samples - of whatever.

Once prepared, the agar becomes a gel that sits on the bottom of a petri dish. Apply the samples to the top surface with a cotton bud (a zigzag or hash pattern enables you to see results more clearly) and the agar gel encourages the growth of ... 

Sorry no pic, but the agar comes as a powder in pill pottles.

Hard to get,  especially in the small quantities  home/budding scientists need. We are one of the few suppliers. 1 pottle  with 1 cup boiled water makes 4-5 plates .

Do follow the instructions - and use medium not strong microwave to sterilise. (Strong microwave  it for too long and you melt the petri dish. - a different science.)
